about rebecca

Rebecca Estelle Livick is a rural public librarian who, in her spare time, works at her local YMCA. Having grown up amid the rolling hills of beautiful southern Wisconsin, she now resides in the enchanting northwoods with her husband and cherished trio of four-legged companions, known affectionately as ‘the crits.’ A mother to two remarkable adult children, Rebecca finds joy in the art of crochet, where she proudly wears the pretend title of ‘master crochetist.’ Her creative spirit extends beyond yarn, as she dabbles in painting and has embarked on her first quilting adventure. Crafting imaginative and delightful stories for children brings great happiness to her heart, and Rebecca can’t wait to share that joy with young readers.

Picture of Rebecca as a child next to her family's small boat. Her little brother is in the boat crying.

I grew up in a small town in southern Wisconsin. My family, along with many other families, grew tobacco. Back then people didn’t know that tobacco could be bad for your health. Did you know tobacco was grown in Wisconsin? In my town, they called it the “Tobacco Capital of the World,” but I’m not sure if that’s true.

I used to love playing in the tobacco shed. It’s where we hung the tobacco upside down to dry out until mid-winter. At the start of summer, the shed was empty, but by fall it was full of tobacco. I even drew this picture and told stories at school about playing in the tobacco shed.

One of the coolest jobs I’ve ever had (even cooler than being a librarian!) was that of Bridge Tender. Picture this: there’s a bridge that goes over a river, but it’s too low for big sailboats or huge ships to fit under. So, the bridge can actually split in two, and each half can go up, up, up, so the boat or ship can go through. It’s called a drawbridge.

But, you can’t just lift it up randomly, because what if a car, a bike, or a person is on it? We have to do a lot of things to warn everyone. There’s a loud horn, flashing lights, and a stop-arm that comes down. Only after all those warnings, we finally open the bridge.

Have you ever seen the control panel of a drawbridge? Imagine pressing buttons and making the bridge go up! Here’s a picture of the controls and the bridge open for a ship to go through!

I really, really love being in the water! Whether it’s a big lake, a flowing river, or a fun swimming pool, I just can’t get enough of it!

Let me tell you about this super silly picture of me. It’s from when I was a kid, all excited and getting ready to jump into a lake in northern Wisconsin. Imagine how much fun it was!

And guess what? Now that I’m grown up, I work at a place called the YMCA, and guess what they have? A pool! Yep, right after I finish my work, I can splash and swim in the pool.

Guess what my super-duper amazing talent is? It’s crocheting! I started learning this fun skill when I was in high school, and guess what? As the years went by, I got better and better at it. Now I can crochet almost anything.

I wish you could see all the cool things I’ve made. Picture this: colorful scarves, cozy blankets, and even cute little stuffed animals. It’s like magic with yarn and a hook! Here are some pictures of a few of the fantastic things I’ve created.

I love living in Wisconsin! We get to see all four seasons. In spring, things start coming to life with new buds. That’s when many of the birds return after they migrate to warmer places in the fall.

Then comes summer when the sun shines super bright, and it gets hot and humid. Summer’s the best time for exciting adventures and swimming!

When it’s fall, the leaves on the trees turn all kinds of colors. It’s like nature is putting on a show with red, orange, and yellow leaves!

And finally, there’s winter. Everything gets covered in a soft, white blanket of snow. It’s so pretty. We can build snowmen, have snowball fights, and even go sledding down hills.

Living in Wisconsin means having a whole year of different adventures and fun times with each season. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else!
